Knowledge is the most valuable asset in an organization, yet it gets blocked from flowing all the time. It sits in silos, is fragmented, gets distorted as it moves to the right people, or worst of all, atrophies and is forgotten and lost. It’s hard to put an economic value on such knowledge loss, but it’s big. Ever since the rise of Knowledge Management (KM) in the late 80s and 90s, groups of people have tried with mixed results to free up the access to and flow of knowledge.
We’re now at a once-in-50-years breakthrough with AI-enabled Conversational Intelligence.
It’s now possible to identify a goal in the morning shower, conceive of questions to put in front of tens of thousands of people (employees, customers, channel partners) to get their knowledge, wisdom and beliefs on how to best accomplish it, gather massive amounts of primary data from this process, synthesize and analyze the results and form a plan by the evening cocktail. That’s no exaggeration on scale…tens of thousands of participants. What makes this powerful beyond the speed and scale, is the method. An AI-enabled approach brings out the truth, the essence, the participant’s nuanced beliefs. This approach can ingest, structure, categorize and summarize this unstructured (but massively rich) data near instantaneously.
This is conversational intelligence and its initial use case at scale is capturing employee knowledge, insights and sentiment. The innovator and leader in this new, game-changing category is Natter.
Natter is the creator of enterprise conversational intelligence, having developed a platform for the largest organizations to mine their ranks for meaning, understanding and truths - at scale, and at speed.
Costanoa Ventures is proud to have co-led the Series A investment round at Natter alongside our friends at Renegade Partners. The bet we are making is simple: AI has finally made conversational intelligence a viable, massive, and defensible category, and Natter is the first mover and leader in this vital category.
Founding a new category requires a rare blend of product vision and enterprise execution. CEO Charlie Woodward brings essential AI and data product experience combined with the necessary GTM skills gleaned from scaling EMEA enterprise BD at Uber. His career started with work focused on ensuring voices get heard, working with Members of the European Parliament lobbying for referendum results to be respected. He received two grants to research on improving voter outcomes through better information while at Columbia University and the London School of Economics.
This is the Founder-Market Fit, and passion-for-problem required to build a new category, and to sell a complex, high-ACV solution to enterprises.
Charlie has assembled a world class team of technology and business leaders that built the very first Enterprise AI disruptor products to survey-based research.
The opportunity to co-lead Natter’s Series A is not just an investment in a product and team, it’s also a high-conviction bet on a platform shift from the last generation of tech (surveys) to a new, AI-native, conversational model. This was literally impossible before advances in AI, and now is the time to build a generational company and enable organizations of all types to break through and hit their vital and meaningful goals.
