This week, Bloomberg's Jamie Tarabay reported on a new generation of founders: former intelligence officers who bring hard-won operational experience to some of our country’s most urgent technology challenges. Our portfolio company Lumbra and its founder Aaron Brown were featured prominently. So this feels like the right moment to share why we’re so excited to have backed them.
One of the most urgent challenges facing our intelligence community (“IC”) is how to keep pace with the sheer volume and complexity of information in today's world. The U.S. IC processes massive streams of multi-modal data — images, signals, text, reports — across both classified ("high side") and unclassified ("low side") networks. But too much of this information remains siloed. Analysts struggle to connect the dots across systems, and to securely share critical insights with colleagues in other agencies. Yet national security and public safety depend on their ability to bridge those gaps while ensuring the right protections and provenance.
Lumbra’s CEO, Aaron Brown, fundamentally understands this problem, having served as an Army Ranger before joining the CIA, where he rose to deputy branch chief running counterterrorism operations in Pakistan and Afghanistan. As he told Bloomberg, "During my career, I was regularly confronted with massive volumes of data, and I knew with certainty that buried within it were clues to terrorist networks, emerging leaders, and active plots. We always knew we were missing something."
That's why he founded Lumbra. Recent advances in AI (especially agentic frameworks) help synthesize information, execute complex research tasks, and surface insights at unprecedented speed. But, in intelligence, these systems can't be off the shelf; they have to be built to handle classification levels, ensure accuracy, and maintain trust in every output.
That's why we were so impressed by Aaron and the Lumbra team. Aaron is a rare talent: a decorated operator and senior intelligence officer who is also a serial company builder with both deep operational experience and entrepreneurial grit. Having worked closely with several other teams in our national security portfolio, including Cape, he has earned the trust and respect of everyone he’s worked with.
This rare combination of domain expertise, founder chops, and trusted relationships makes Aaron uniquely suited to lead his team in tackling this challenge. The Lumbra team understands both the technical requirements, and the cultural and operational realities, of working with the IC.
We believe Lumbra is building something essential: an intelligence system that can operate at machine speed yet with human judgment at its core. Done right, this technology can help analysts see more clearly, respond more quickly, and collaborate more effectively — all while safeguarding the security of the underlying information.
For all these reasons, we're proud to partner with Aaron and his team on this important mission, and excited to see what they will continue to build.
